About Author

Hi, I’m Guobiao Li, but you can call me Gary. I’m an engineer and entrepreneur working in the software and AI industry. In 2024, I founded Sharepon, an online community where people share coupons and deals. While my resume tells part of my story, it doesn’t capture its entirety. Growing up, I was a quiet kid, but I became someone my friends turned to when they needed help making sense of their thoughts. I think it’s because I have a knack for seeing things from different angles and asking the right questions. Through these one-to-one conversations, I help people not only understand their situations better but also understand themselves better.

I always believe in the power of close conversations, whether with a friend or with oneself. I sometimes sit quietly, sorting through the thoughts and feelings that surface, reflecting deeply on my life. These moments of self-conversation can be just as enlightening as talking to someone else. Over time, I’ve come to learn a lot about how people, including myself, navigate life and society.

It hasn’t been an easy journey. I’ve spent years trying to figure out who I really am, what I truly like or dislike, and where my strengths and weaknesses lie. It’s surprisingly difficult to get to the core of your true self, especially when you’ve grown up in an environment where decisions are often made for you. Think about it: if someone asked you to introduce yourself, would you start with your job, school, or where you’re from? But do these really capture who you are?

Now, imagine you have a friend who says, “I’ve always liked sky blue since I was a kid. I don’t really recall why I loved it back then, but now I think it sort of matches my personality. It’s calm. It’s not as intense as red or orange, and it is even a bit melancholic. I feel like I’m the same way. No matter how great the news is, something always holds me back from feeling ecstatic, as if I’m not allowed to feel pure joy. When did I start becoming like this?” Conversations like these, whether with a friend or with yourself, can reveal so much about what shapes and has shaped us.

That’s the spirit behind this blog, Next to Fire Pit. Here, especially in the My Reflections section, I’ll be sharing my thoughts, experiences, and stories. These are things I’ve puzzled over and lessons I’ve learned. My hope is that by sharing these, they might help you in your own journey too. So, pull up a chair, sit by the fire, and let’s reflect together.
